This equipment allows for both static and dynamic friction to be determined. The apparatus consists of a base board (49 x 7.5 x 2cm) with rough surface and a smaller board with hook. The base is placed on a desk to which has been attached a clamp on pulley (item code 2592001), the small board placed on the base board at the end away from the pulley. One end of a cord is attached to a hooked weight carrier, (item codes 4880 or 4990) the other is passed over the pulley then attached to the hook of the small board which is then placed on the base board. Weights are added to the carrier until the friction of the system is overcome. Weights may be added to the small board to increase the force needed to overcome the resultant friction. A plate is supplied that fits to the bottom of the small board to change the type of surface. This may also be performed with spring balances. Suitable for years 7-10.
