Eddy Current apparatus
Lenz's law states that an induced EMF always gives rise to a current whose magnetic field opposes the original change in flux, ie the direction of an induced current is such as to oppose the change causing it.
When a conductor such as a solid aluminium plate moves relative to a magnetic field, the induced currents flow in closed circuits and oppose the change that causes them. These loops are called eddy currents.
Jupiter Scientific’s Eddy Current Apparatus demonstrates such principles. The apparatus consists of a set of two aluminium plates which are free to swing inside a magnetic field. One of the plates is a solid sheet of aluminium whilst the other plate is pronged.
